     - communicative- with others - with themselves [ introspective device and "figuring out" device]
     - way to compress information
     - planning tool
     - memory notation !
     - independent aesthetic endeavour
     - pedagogical, andragogical, heuratagogical tool
     - major use in mind /brain exercise and health
